कविं पुराणमनुशासितार मणोरणीयांसमनुस्मरेद्यः । सर्वस्य धातारमचिन्त्यरूपम् आदित्यवर्णं तमसः परस्तात् ॥
kaviṃ purāṇamanuśāsitāraṃ aṇoraṇīyāṃsamanusmaredyaḥ | sarvasya dhātāramacintyarūpam ādityavarṇaṃ tamasaḥ parastāt ||
Translation
One should meditate on the Omniscient, the Ancient, the Ruler, subtler than the subtle, the Supporter of all, of inconceivable form, brilliant like the sun, beyond darkness —
Interpretation
Krishna describes the object of meditation for the moment of death. Seven attributes of the Divine to meditate upon: (1) kavi — the omniscient, the seer; (2) puranam — the ancient, without beginning; (3) anushasitaram — the ruler of all; (4) anor aniyamsam — subtler than the most subtle (beyond the reach of the finest analysis); (5) sarvasya dhatarama — the supporter/sustainer of all; (6) achintya-rupam — of inconceivable form (beyond mental comprehension); (7) aditya-varnam tamasah parastat — brilliant as the sun, beyond all darkness. Each quality is a doorway for the meditating mind.
