प्रशान्तात्मा विगतभीर्ब्रह्मचारिव्रते स्थितः । मनः संयम्य मच्चित्तो युक्त आसीत मत्परः ॥
praśāntātmā vigatabhīrbrahmacarivrate sthitaḥ | manaḥ saṃyamya maccitto yukta āsīta matparaḥ ||
Translation
Serene in self, fearless, established in the vow of brahmacharya, having restrained the mind — seated, united in yoga, with the mind on Me, with Me as the supreme goal.
Interpretation
The inner qualities for deep meditation: (1) prashantatma — serene, pacified self; (2) vigata-bhir — completely fearless; (3) brahmacharivrate sthita — established in brahmacharya, the discipline of directing vital energy toward spiritual purposes rather than dissipating it; (4) mana-samyamya — mind restrained. And the crucial culmination: mat-chitta (mind fixed on Me, the Divine) and mat-para (the Divine as the supreme goal). Meditation without devotion becomes mechanical; devotion without meditation becomes sentimental. Krishna asks for both.
