4.12
काङ्क्षन्तः कर्मणां सिद्धिं यजन्त इह देवताः | क्षिप्रं हि मानुषे लोके सिद्धिर्भवति कर्मजा ||१२||
kāṅkṣhantaḥ karmaṇāṁ siddhiṁ yajanta iha devatāḥ kṣhipraṁ hi māṇuṣhe loke siddhir bhavati karmajā
Translation
Men in this world desire success in fruitive activities, and therefore they worship the demigods. Quickly, of course, men get results from fruitive work in this world.
Interpretation
Those who want quick material results worship the demigods (devas), who control various cosmic functions. This path does work — quick results do come. But the results are temporary and do not lead to liberation. Krishna is not condemning this path but placing it in perspective: it delivers what it promises, but what it promises is limited.
