Translation

One who is not disturbed in mind even amidst the threefold miseries, or elated when there is happiness, and who is free from attachment, fear, and anger, is called a sage of steady mind.

Interpretation

Three pairs of qualities define steady wisdom: not disturbed in pain, not excited in pleasure (equanimity); free from attachment, free from fear, free from anger. These six qualities — or rather three freedoms — describe a person whose inner stability is independent of external events. They feel but are not swept away.
