श्रीभगवानुवाच | प्रजहाति यदा कामान्सर्वान्पार्थ मनोगतान् | आत्मन्येवात्मना तुष्टः स्थितप्रज्ञस्तदोच्यते ||५५||
śhrī bhagavān uvācha prajahāti yadā kāmān sarvān pārtha mano-gatān ātmany evātmanā tuṣhṭaḥ sthita-prajñas tadochyate
Translation
The Supreme Lord said: O Partha, when a man gives up all varieties of desire for sense gratification, which arise from mental concoction, and when his mind is purified and he finds satisfaction in the self alone, then he is said to be in pure transcendental consciousness.
Interpretation
The first characteristic of the Sthitaprajna: all desires arising from the mind have been abandoned. Not suppressed — abandoned. The mind is not at war with itself, grasping for desires while trying to renounce them. Instead, it has found genuine contentment in the Self alone. This is the satisfaction that does not depend on any external object.
