इदं ते नातपस्काय नाभक्ताय कदाचन | न चाशुश्रूषवे वाच्यं न च मां योऽभ्यसूयति ||
idaṁ te nātapaskāya nābhaktāya kadācana na cāśuśrūṣave vācyaṁ na ca māṁ yo 'bhyasūyati
Translation
This is never to be spoken to one who is without austerity, without devotion, without a desire to listen, or to one who finds fault with Me.
Interpretation
The teaching has a protective clause: it should not be shared indiscriminately. Four types of people are not ready for it: those without tapas (no spiritual discipline — the teaching requires a prepared vessel), those without bhakti (no devotion — the teaching requires a loving heart), those who have no sincere desire to listen (the teaching requires openness), and those who find fault with the Divine (the teaching requires basic trust). This is not elitism but recognition that the deepest teaching requires the deepest readiness. Pearls shared without discernment are not received — they are trampled.
