Translation
Threefold is the gate of this hell that destroys the soul: desire, anger, and greed. Therefore one should abandon these three.
Interpretation
One of the Gita's most practically important verses: the three gates of hell are kama (desire/lust), krodha (anger), and lobha (greed). These three are not merely unpleasant emotions but the fundamental triad that destroys the soul — that progressively separates consciousness from its divine ground. Desire, when frustrated, becomes anger; accumulated unfulfilled desire and frustrated anger become greed. The three are linked in a self-reinforcing triangle. The instruction is clear: abandon all three. Not suppress or indulge, but see through them to the deeper contentment of the Self that requires nothing external.
