अन्ये त्वेवमजानन्तः श्रुत्वान्येभ्य उपासते । तेऽपि चातितरन्त्येव मृत्युं श्रुतिपरायणाः ॥
anye tvevamajānantaḥ śrutvānyebhya upāsate | te'pi cātitarantyeva mṛtyuṃ śrutiparāyaṇāḥ ||
Translation
Others, not knowing thus, worship having heard from others. Even they, devoted to what is heard, cross over death.
Interpretation
A fourth path, accessible to all: shravan — hearing from others, following the teaching received from realized teachers or sacred scripture. Even those who do not yet have the direct experience (ajnantah — not knowing in the direct sense), who simply hear and follow with faith (shruti-parayanah — devoted to the teachings heard) — even they cross over death (mrityu atitaranti). The path of sravan (sacred hearing) and following is sufficient. This is the universalism of the Gita: no one is excluded from liberation on grounds of incapacity.
