ध्यानेनात्मनि पश्यन्ति केचिदात्मानमात्मना । अन्ये सांख्येन योगेन कर्मयोगेन चापरे ॥

dhyānenātmani paśyanti kecidātmānamātmanā | anye sāṃkhyena yogena karmayogena cāpare ||

Translation

Some, through meditation, perceive the Self within the self by the Self. Others do so through the Sankhya yoga of knowledge, and others through karma yoga.

Interpretation

Three valid paths to self-realization: (1) dhyanena — through meditation, some perceive the Self within themselves by the Self (the Self directly illuminating itself in the silence of meditation); (2) sankhya-yoga — through the yoga of discriminative knowledge, distinguishing the real from the unreal, the Self from the non-self; (3) karma-yoga — through the yoga of selfless action, purifying the mind through dedicated service until the Self is revealed. All three lead to the same recognition. No one path is universally best; each is best for a particular temperament.
