13.15

सर्वेन्द्रियगुणाभासं सर्वेन्द्रियविवर्जितम् । असक्तं सर्वभृच्चैव निर्गुणं गुणभोक्तृ च ॥

sarvendriyaguṇābhāsaṃ sarvendriyavivarjitam | asaktaṃ sarvabhṛccaiva nirguṇaṃ guṇabhoktṛ ca ||

Translation

Shining through the functions of all the senses, yet without the senses — unattached yet sustaining all — free from the gunas yet experiencing the gunas —

Interpretation

A series of paradoxes describes Brahman: sarvendriya-guna-abhasam (shining through the functions of all senses) — the senses perceive, but it is Brahman's light of consciousness that illumines the perception — yet sarvendriya-vivarjitam (itself without senses). Asaktam (unattached — not clinging to anything) yet sarvabhrit (sustaining all). Nirgunam (beyond the three gunas, without qualities in the ultimate sense) yet guna-bhoktri (apparently experiencing the gunas through the beings in whom it is present). These paradoxes cannot be resolved intellectually; they are resolved in direct realization.
