यस्मान्नोद्विजते लोको लोकान्नोद्विजते च यः । हर्षामर्षभयोद्वेगैर्मुक्तो यः स च मे प्रियः ॥
yasmānnodvijate loko lokānnodvijate ca yaḥ | harṣāmarṣabhayodvegairmukto yaḥ sa ca me priyaḥ ||
Translation
One from whom the world is not agitated and who is not agitated by the world — who is free from elation, envy, fear, and agitation — that one is dear to Me.
Interpretation
The ideal devotee's relationship to the world: yasmat na udvijate lokah (the world is not disturbed because of whom — they don't cause suffering), lokan na udvijate cha yah (and who is not disturbed by the world — they don't react with agitation). Freed from four movements: harsha (elation — the excitement of pleasure), amarsha (envy/intolerance), bhaya (fear), and udvega (nervous agitation). This is the person who moves through the world like a ship through water — fully present in the world, not disturbing it unnecessarily, and not being rocked by it.
