श्रीभगवानुवाच सुदुर्दर्शमिदं रूपं दृष्टवानसि यन्मम । देवा अप्यस्य रूपस्य नित्यं दर्शनकाङ्क्षिणः ॥
śrī bhagavān uvāca sudurdarśamidaṃ rūpaṃ dṛṣṭavānasi yanmama | devā apyasya rūpasya nityaṃ darśanakāṅkṣiṇaḥ ||
Translation
The Blessed Lord said: This form of Mine which you have seen is very difficult to behold. Even the gods are constantly longing to see this form.
Interpretation
The rarity of the vision is confirmed: su-durdarsham idam rupam — 'This form is very difficult to behold.' Not just rare — extremely, supremely rare. And the extraordinary statement: deva api asya rupasya nityam darshana-kankshinah — 'Even the gods are constantly longing to see this form.' The very beings who inhabit the celestial realms, who have powers humans can only imagine, long to see what Arjuna has just seen. The vision granted to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra is something even the gods pine for.
