वायुर्यमोऽग्निर्वरुणः शशाङ्कः प्रजापतिस्त्वं प्रपितामहश्च । नमो नमस्तेऽस्तु सहस्रकृत्वः पुनश्च भूयोऽपि नमो नमस्ते ॥
vāyuryamo'gnirvaruṇaḥ śaśāṅkaḥ prajāpatistvaṃ prapitāmahaśca | namo namaste'stu sahasrakṛtvaḥ punaśca bhūyo'pi namo namaste ||
Translation
You are Vayu, Yama, Agni, Varuna, the moon. You are Prajapati and the great-grandfather. Salutations to You a thousand times — and again and again salutations to You!
Interpretation
The identification of the Divine with all the major deities: Vayu (wind/breath), Yama (death and dharmic justice), Agni (fire), Varuna (cosmic order and the ocean), Shasanka (the moon), Prajapati (the progenitor/lord of creatures), and prapitamaha (the great-grandfather — even older than the grandfather-creator Brahma). And then the ecstatic repetition of salutation: namo namaste'stu sahasra-kritavah (salutations to you a thousand times) punas cha bhuyo api namo namaste (and again and again more salutations to you!). The repetition itself conveys the overflow of devotion.
