11.25

दंष्ट्राकरालानि च ते मुखानि दृष्ट्वैव कालानलसन्निभानि । दिशो न जाने न लभे च शर्म प्रसीद देवेश जगन्निवास ॥

daṃṣṭrākarālāni ca te mukhāni dṛṣṭvaiva kālānalasannibhāni | diśo na jāne na labhe ca śarma prasīda deveśa jagannivāsa ||

Translation

Seeing Your mouths terrible with fangs, resembling the fires of time — I know not the directions and find no shelter. Be gracious, O Lord of gods, O Abode of the world.

Interpretation

Complete disorientation: dirsho na jane — I know not the directions. The basic spatial orientation that grounds human consciousness is gone. Na labhe cha sharma — I find no shelter. And the vision of the terrible mouths: kala-anala-sannibhani — resembling the fires of time (kala = time/death, anala = fire). The cosmic destruction is visible in those mouths. And from this complete helplessness, Arjuna's prayer shifts from description to supplication: prasida (be gracious, be pleased, have mercy). He appeals to the two aspects — Devesa (Lord of gods) and Jagan-nivasa (Abode of the world, the Divine in whom all is contained).
