नभःस्पृशं दीप्तमनेकवर्णं व्यात्ताननं दीप्तविशालनेत्रम् । दृष्ट्वा हि त्वां प्रव्यथितान्तरात्मा धृतिं न विन्दामि शमं च विष्णो ॥
nabhaḥspṛśaṃ dīptamanekavarṇaṃ vyāttānanam dīptaviśālanettam | dṛṣṭvā hi tvāṃ pravyathitāntarātmā dhṛtiṃ na vindāmi śamaṃ ca viṣṇo ||
Translation
Seeing You touching the sky, blazing, of many colors, with wide-open mouths and wide blazing eyes — my inner self is trembling, O Vishnu; I find no steadiness or peace.
Interpretation
Arjuna's distress deepens: nabhaḥ-spṛśam (touching the sky), diptam (blazing), aneka-varnam (of many colors), vyatta-ananam (wide-open mouths), dipta-vishala-netram (wide blazing eyes). And his inner state: pravyathita-antaratma — inner self is trembling (not just external fear but the innermost being is shaken). Dhriti na vindami sham ca — I find no steadiness, no peace. This is the ego-dissolution that the vision causes: the finite self cannot maintain its coherence in the face of the infinite.
