बृहत्साम तथा साम्नां गायत्री छन्दसामहम् । मासानां मार्गशीर्षोऽहमृतूनां कुसुमाकरः ॥
bṛhatsāma tathā sāmnāṃ gāyatrī chandasāmaham | māsānāṃ mārgaśīrṣo'hamṛtūnāṃ kusumākaraḥ ||
Translation
Among the Sama hymns, I am the Brihatsaman. Among meters, I am the Gayatri. Among months, I am Margashirsha. Among seasons, I am the flower-bearing spring.
Interpretation
Among the Sama Veda's hymns, the Divine is the Brihatsaman — the greatest and most majestic hymn. Among metrical forms (chandas) of Sanskrit poetry, the Divine is the Gayatri — the most sacred meter, source of the Gayatri mantra. Among months, the Divine is Margashirsha (November-December in the Hindu calendar) — considered the most auspicious, the month of harvest and spiritual festival. Among the six seasons, the Divine is Kusumakara — spring, the flower-bearing season, the most beautiful.
