अनन्तश्चास्मि नागानां वरुणो यादसामहम् । पितॄणामर्यमा चास्मि यमः संयमतामहम् ॥
anantaścāsmi nāgānāṃ varuṇo yādasāmaham | pitṝṇāmaryamā cāsmi yamaḥ saṃyamatāmaham ||
Translation
Among the Nagas (serpent beings), I am Ananta. Among water beings, I am Varuna. Among the ancestors, I am Aryama. Among the controllers, I am Yama.
Interpretation
Among Nagas (great cosmic serpent beings), the Divine is Ananta — the infinite, the endless, the cosmic serpent on whom Vishnu rests at the end of cosmic cycles, representing the infinite ground of existence. Among beings of water, the Divine is Varuna — the great Vedic deity of the cosmic ocean and divine law. Among the Pitris (ancestors), the Divine is Aryama — the chief of the ancestors. Among controllers and dispensers of justice, the Divine is Yama — the lord of death and dharmic justice.
