1.27

कृपया परयाविष्टो विषीदन्निदमब्रवीत् | अर्जुन उवाच | dṛṣṭvemaṁ sva-janaṁ kṛṣṇa yuyutsuṁ samupasthitam ||२७||

kṛpayā parayāviṣṭo viṣīdann idam abravīt arjuna uvāca dṛṣṭvemaṁ sva-janaṁ kṛṣṇa yuyutsuṁ samupasthitam

Translation

He was filled with deep compassion and spoke thus in grief: Arjuna said: My dear Krishna, seeing my own kinsmen present before me in such a fighting spirit —

Interpretation

The word used for Arjuna's emotion is 'kripaya' — compassion. Arjuna's grief is not cowardice; it arises from the deepest human compassion. Yet Krishna will show that even genuine compassion, when it leads to abandonment of one's sacred duty, must be transcended.
