ते तं भुक्त्वा स्वर्गलोकं विशालं क्षीणे पुण्ये मर्त्यलोकं विशन्ति । एवं त्रयीधर्ममनुप्रपन्ना गतागतं कामकामा लभन्ते ॥
te taṃ bhuktvā svargalokaṃ viśālaṃ kṣīṇe puṇye martyalokaṃ viśanti | evaṃ trayīdharmamanuprpannā gatāgataṃ kāmakāmā labhante ||
Translation
Having enjoyed that vast heavenly world, they re-enter the mortal world when their merit is exhausted. Thus following the dharma of the three Vedas with desires, seeking objects of desire, they get coming and going.
Interpretation
The limitation of heaven: kshine punye — when the merit is exhausted. Heavenly enjoyment is paid for by accumulated good karma; when the balance runs out, back to the mortal world (martya-loka). The key phrase: kama-kama (desiring desires, craving objects of desire). As long as desire drives action, even noble action, the result is temporary. Gata-agatam labhante — they get coming and going, the endless cycle. The path to liberation requires that desires themselves be transcended, not merely fulfilled at higher levels.
