पिताहमस्य जगतो माता धाता पितामहः । वेद्यं पवित्रमोंकार ऋक्साम यजुरेव च ॥
pitāhamasya jagato mātā dhātā pitāmahaḥ | vedyaṃ pavitramoṃkāra ṛksāma yajureva ca ||
Translation
I am the father of this world, the mother, the supporter, the grandfather. I am the object of knowledge, the purifier, the syllable Om, and also the Rig, Sama, and Yajur Vedas.
Interpretation
The Divine's relationship to creation through the metaphor of family: father (the one who seeds creation), mother (the one who nourishes it), dhata (supporter/sustainer), and pitamaha (grandfather — the original ancestor). And the Divine is the vedya (the object to be known through all knowledge), pavitra (the purifier), Om (the primordial sound), and the three Vedas (Rig — knowledge, Sama — beauty/music, Yajur — action). All learning, all purification, all sacred sound — these are aspects of the one Divine being revealed through different doorways.
