यत्रोपरमते चित्तं निरुद्धं योगसेवया । यत्र चैवात्मनात्मानं पश्यन्नात्मनि तुष्यति ॥
yatroparamate cittaṃ niruddhaṃ yogasevayā | yatra caivātmanātmānaṃ paśyannātmani tuṣyati ||
Translation
Where the mind is restrained by the practice of yoga and comes to rest, where one sees the Self by the Self and is content in the Self —
Interpretation
This verse (continuing through 6.23) describes samadhi — the state of complete meditative absorption. Uparamate — the mind comes to rest, ceases its movement. Niruddha — thoroughly restrained through yoga practice. And then: the Self sees the Self by the Self (atmanatmanam pashyan). No subject-object duality; no separate observer watching the Self. The Self illuminates itself. And in this, there is tushyati — perfect contentment, fulfillment in the Self alone.
