Bhagavad Gita
2.44

भोगैश्वर्यप्रसक्तानां तयापहृतचेतसाम् | व्यवसायात्मिका बुद्धिः समाधौ न विधीयते ||४४||

bhogaiśhvarya-prasaktānāṁ tayāpahṛta-chetasām vyavasāyātmikā buddhiḥ samādhau na vidhīyate

Translation

In the minds of those who are too attached to sense enjoyment and material opulence, the resolute determination for God does not take place.

Interpretation

Attachment to pleasure and power literally prevents the arising of the focused, determined spiritual intelligence (vyavasāyātmikā buddhi). The mind colonized by desire for things cannot simultaneously be fixed on the eternal. This is why renunciation — at least of the attitude of clinging — is the prerequisite for genuine yoga.
