dvau bhūta-sargau loke 'smin daiva āsura eva ca daivo vistaraśaḥ prokta āsuraṁ pārtha me śṛṇu
Translation
There are two types of created beings in this world: the divine and the demoniac. The divine has been described at length; now hear from Me of the demoniac, O Arjuna.
Interpretation
Having catalogued the divine qualities, Krishna now turns to a detailed description of the asuri nature. This is not a classification of separate species of beings but of two tendencies that exist within every human heart — the divine pull toward truth, love, and liberation, and the demoniac pull toward ego, delusion, and bondage. Understanding the demoniac in precise detail — its characteristics, its psychology, its destiny — equips the seeker to recognize and uproot these tendencies within themselves.
