Bhagavad Gita
14.23

उदासीनवदासीनो गुणैर्यो न विचाल्यते | गुणा वर्तन्त इत्येव योऽवतिष्ठति नेङ्गते ||

udāsīnavad āsīno guṇair yo na vicālyate guṇā vartanta ity evaṁ yo 'vatiṣṭhati neṅgate

Translation

One who sits like one who is indifferent, who is not moved by the gunas, who stands firm knowing 'the gunas are acting' — he does not waver.

Interpretation

The gunatita sits like a neutral observer — not the indifference of uncaring detachment, but the steady clarity of the witness who knows that all guna-activity is happening within nature, not within the Self. The key recognition is in the words 'the gunas are acting' — the liberated person has shifted identity from the character on stage to the awareness watching the performance. The gunas swirl; the witness remains. This is not suppression of experience but a radical recontextualization of who one is.
