Interpretation

Arjuna asks the practical question every seeker wants answered: How do we recognize a gunatita — one who has transcended the gunas? What are the observable signs? And most importantly, how does one actually achieve this transcendence? These three questions launch one of the Gita's most important sections: the description of the sthitaprajna (steady-minded sage) in this context — the person who has gone beyond the push and pull of nature. Arjuna's question is both theological and practical: what does freedom look like from the outside, and how do we get there?
