ūrdhvaṁ gacchanti sattva-sthā madhye tiṣṭhanti rājasāḥ jaghanya-guṇa-vṛtti-sthā adho gacchanti tāmasāḥ
Translation
Those established in sattva rise upward; those in rajas remain in the middle; those in tamas, abiding in the lowest guna's functions, go downward.
Interpretation
The three gunas create three directional movements of the soul through existence. Sattva moves upward — toward greater light, understanding, and ultimately liberation. Rajas maintains a middle position — caught between aspiration and desire, between transcendence and indulgence. Tamas moves downward — toward greater density, confusion, and limitation. This vertical metaphor captures the lived experience: when sattva prevails, we feel elevated; in rajas, we feel horizontally driven; in tamas, we feel heavy and pulled down. The entire yogic path is the art of cultivating upward movement through sattva.
