रजस्तमश्चाभिभूय सत्त्वं भवति भारत | रजः सत्त्वं तमश्चैव तमः सत्त्वं रजस्तथा ||
rajas tamaś cābhibhūya sattvaṁ bhavati bhārata rajaḥ sattvaṁ tamaś caiva tamaḥ sattvaṁ rajas tathā
Translation
Sattva prevails, having overpowered rajas and tamas, O Arjuna; rajas prevails, having overpowered sattva and tamas; and tamas prevails, having overpowered sattva and rajas.
Interpretation
The gunas are in constant dynamic competition within every being. At any given moment, one guna dominates while suppressing the others. This is not a static situation — the gunas shift throughout the day, with different activities, with diet, with season, and with our choices. In the morning after good sleep, sattva may prevail. After an exciting encounter or competitive activity, rajas surges. After a heavy meal or before sleep, tamas dominates. Understanding this flux enables the practitioner to consciously cultivate sattva and gradually transcend even that.
