ज्योतिषामपि तज्ज्योतिस्तमसः परमुच्यते । ज्ञानं ज्ञेयं ज्ञानगम्यं हृदि सर्वस्य धिष्ठितम् ॥
jyotiṣāmapi tajjyotistaMasaḥ paramucyate | jñānaṃ jñeyaṃ jñānagamyaṃ hṛdi sarvasya dhiṣṭhitam ||
Translation
It is the light of all lights, said to be beyond darkness. It is knowledge, the object of knowledge, and the goal of knowledge — seated in the heart of all.
Interpretation
The culminating description of Brahman: jyotisham api taj-jyoti (the light of all lights — not a light among lights but the light that illumines all lights, including the sun and moon and fire). Tamasah param (beyond darkness — darkness being the metaphor for ignorance and non-being, Brahman is beyond both). And the triple identification: jnanam (knowledge itself — Brahman is pure knowing), jneyam (the object of knowledge), and jnana-gamyam (the goal reached through knowledge). And finally: hridi sarvasya dhishthitam — 'seated in the heart of all.' This is the ultimate answer: the Divine is not elsewhere but here, in the heart.
