असक्तिरनभिष्वङ्गः पुत्रदारगृहादिषु । नित्यं च समचित्तत्वमिष्टानिष्टोपपत्तिषु ॥
asaktirānabhiṣvaṅgaḥ putradāragṛhādiṣu | nityaṃ ca samacittatvamishtāniṣṭopapattiṣu ||
Translation
Non-attachment, not clinging to children, wife, home, and the like — and constant equal-mindedness in pleasant and unpleasant events —
Interpretation
Asakti (non-attachment) and anabhishvanga (not-clinging — a stronger word, the absence of the tight, desperate grip of possessiveness) toward the relationships that normally bind most deeply: children, spouse, home. This is not coldness or indifference — it is the mature love that does not clutch, that allows those loved to be free. And: nitya sama-chittatvam (constant equal-mindedness) in ishta-anishta-upapattishu (when pleasant or unpleasant events occur). The equanimity is not occasional but constant (nitya).
