12.13

अद्वेष्टा सर्वभूतानां मैत्रः करुण एव च । निर्ममो निरहङ्कारः समदुःखसुखः क्षमी ॥

adveṣṭā sarvabhūtānāṃ maitraḥ karuṇa eva ca | nirmamo nirahaṅkāraḥ samaduḥkhasukhaḥ kṣamī ||

Translation

One who hates no creature, who is friendly and compassionate — free from 'I-ness' and 'mine-ness,' equal in pleasure and pain, forgiving —

Interpretation

The description of the ideal devotee begins here and continues through verse 20 — one of the Gita's most beloved sections. Verse 13 offers the first five qualities: (1) adveshta sarva-bhutanam — hates no creature (no enemy, absolute non-hatred); (2) maitra — friendly, full of loving-kindness; (3) karuna — compassionate; (4) nirmama — free from 'mine-ness,' no possessiveness; (5) nirahankar — free from ego-sense; (6) sama-duhkha-sukhah — equal in pleasure and pain; (7) ksami — forgiving. These qualities arise naturally in one who has realized the one Self in all beings.
