mā te vyathā mā ca vimūḍhabhāvo dṛṣṭvā rūpaṃ ghoramīdṛṅmamedam | vyapetabhīḥ prītamanāḥ punastvaṃ tadeva me rūpamidaṃ prapaśya ||
Translation
Do not be afraid, do not be confused, having seen this terrible form of Mine. With fear dispelled and with joyful mind, now again behold that same form of Mine.
Interpretation
The Divine speaks with compassion to the shaken Arjuna: ma te vyatha (do not let there be distress for you), ma ca vimudha-bhava (do not be confused). Having seen the ghora (terrible, awesome) form, Arjuna is invited back: vyapeta-bhih (with fear gone), prita-manah (with joyful mind) — punas tvam tada eva me rupam prapassya — 'again behold that same form of Mine.' The invitation is to return to the familiar, beloved form — now infused with the knowledge of who it truly is.
