अदृष्टपूर्वं हृषितोऽस्मि दृष्ट्वा भयेन च प्रव्यथितं मनो मे । तदेव मे दर्शय देवरूपं प्रसीद देवेश जगन्निवास ॥
adṛṣṭapūrvaṃ hṛṣito'smi dṛṣṭvā bhayena ca pravyathitaṃ mano me | tadeva me darśaya devarūpaṃ prasīda deveśa jagannivāsa ||
Translation
I am delighted having seen what was never seen before, yet my mind is troubled with fear. Show me only that divine form — be gracious, O Lord of gods, O Abode of the world.
Interpretation
The paradox of the mystical vision perfectly expressed: hrshito'smi drishthva (I am delighted at seeing) — and bhayena pravyathitam mano me (my mind is troubled with fear). Wonder and terror simultaneously, inseparable. The Vishvarupa produces both and cannot be reduced to either. And the request that marks Arjuna's humanity: tada eva me darshaya deva-rupam — 'Show me only that divine form.' Not the terrible cosmic destroyer — show me the familiar, benevolent form. This request will be answered in the coming verses.
