अनादिमध्यान्तमनन्तवीर्य- मनन्तबाहुं शशिसूर्यनेत्रम् । पश्यामि त्वां दीप्तहुताशवक्त्रं स्वतेजसा विश्वमिदं तपन्तम् ॥
anādyantamanantvīrya- manantabāhuṃ śaśisūryanetram | paśyāmi tvāṃ dīptahutāśavaktraṃ svategasā viśvamidaṃ tapantam ||
Translation
I see You without beginning, middle, or end — of infinite power, with infinite arms, with the sun and moon as eyes, with blazing fire as the mouth, scorching this universe with Your own splendor.
Interpretation
The terrifying beauty of the cosmic form: anadi-madhya-anta (without beginning, middle, or end — complete infinity in time), ananta-virya (infinite power), ananta-bahu (infinite arms), shashi-surya-netra (the moon and sun as eyes — one eye cool and reflective like the moon, the other burning like the sun), diptu-hutasha-vaktram (blazing like fire in the mouth), and scorching the entire universe with its own splendor (svatejas — its own inherent brilliance). The combination of awe and terror begins to emerge in Arjuna's description.
