न मे विदुः सुरगणाः प्रभवं न महर्षयः । अहमादिर्हि देवानां महर्षीणां च सर्वशः ॥
na me viduḥ suragaṇāḥ prabhavaṃ na maharṣayaḥ | ahamādirhi devānāṃ maharṣīṇāṃ ca sarvaśaḥ ||
Translation
Neither the hosts of gods nor the great seers know My origin. For I am the source of the gods and of the great seers in every way.
Interpretation
The Divine's origin is beyond even the comprehension of gods (devas) and great seers (maharshis) — because they themselves originate from the Divine. You cannot step outside the river to see its source if you are the river. The Divine is aham adih (I am the beginning/origin) of both the celestial beings and the great human sages who have probed the depths of wisdom. This is the teaching of Chapter 10: to show that wherever one looks for excellence, origin, or power, one finds the Divine.
