तेषामेवानुकम्पार्थमहमज्ञानजं तमः । नाशयाम्यात्मभावस्थो ज्ञानदीपेन भास्वता ॥
teṣāmevānukampārthamahamajñānajaṃ tamaḥ | nāśayāmyātmabhāvastho jñānadīpena bhāsvatā ||
Translation
Out of compassion for them, dwelling in their own self, I destroy the darkness born of ignorance with the luminous lamp of knowledge.
Interpretation
The most intimate description of divine grace in the entire Gita: atmabhavastho — dwelling in their own self (the Divine lives within the devotee). Out of pure compassion (anukampa), the Divine destroys the darkness of ignorance (ajnanajam tamah — the darkness born of ignorance) using a luminous lamp of knowledge (jnana-dipena bhasvata). The Divine as the inner guru, the indwelling teacher who lights the lamp of wisdom within the devotee's own heart — this is the fulfillment of the path described throughout Chapter 10.
