Bhagavad Gita
1.41

सङ्करो नरकायैव कुलघ्नानां कुलस्य च | पतन्ति पितरो ह्येषां लुप्तपिण्डोदकक्रियाः ||४१||

saṅkaro narakāyaiva kula-ghnānāṁ kulasya cha patanti pitaro hy eṣhāṁ lupta-piṇḍodaka-kriyāḥ

Translation

Such social disharmony leads to hell both the destroyers of the family and the family itself. The ancestors of such fallen families also fall, being deprived of the offerings of food and water.

Interpretation

Arjuna worries about the disruption of ancestral rites (shraddha). In the Vedic worldview, the living have duties to the dead — offering food and water maintains the spiritual connection between generations. War that destroys families disrupts this sacred bond.
