अधर्माभिभवात्कृष्ण प्रदुष्यन्ति कुलस्त्रियः | स्त्रीषु दुष्टासु वार्ष्णेय जायते वर्णसङ्करः ||४०||
adharmābhibhavāt kṛṣhṇa praduṣhyanti kula-striyaḥ strīṣhu duṣṭāsu vārṣhṇeya jāyate varṇa-saṅkaraḥ
Translation
When irreligion is predominant in the family, O Krishna, the women of the family become degraded, and from the degradation of women, O descendant of Vrishni, comes the mixing of castes.
Interpretation
Arjuna continues his social argument, expressing concern about the breakdown of societal order after the war. While his concern is genuine, Krishna will ultimately transcend these social-dharma arguments by pointing to the higher Sanatana Dharma — the eternal law of the soul.
