पाञ्चजन्यं हृषीकेशो देवदत्तं धनञ्जयः | पौण्ड्रं दध्मौ महाशङ्खं भीमकर्मा वृकोदरः ||१५||
pāñchajanyaṁ hṛṣīkeśho devadattaṁ dhanaṁjayaḥ pauṇḍraṁ dadhmau mahā-śhaṅkhaṁ bhīma-karmā vṛkodaraḥ
Translation
Lord Krishna blew His conchshell called Panchajanya; Arjuna blew his, the Devadatta; and Bhima, the voracious eater and doer of herculean tasks, blew his terrific conchshell called Paundra.
Interpretation
Each conchshell has a name and identity. 'Panchajanya' was obtained by Krishna when he killed the demon Panchajana; 'Devadatta' (God-given) belonged to Arjuna. Even Bhima's 'Paundra' is a statement of his enormous might. The naming of conchshells indicates these are not ordinary instruments but sacred objects with spiritual power.
