Interpretation

One of the most radical and compassionate statements in all spiritual literature. Even the most sinful (sudurachar — one who has committed the most grievous acts) — if they worship the Divine with undivided devotion (ananya-bhak) — should be considered a sadhu, a righteous person. Why? Samyag-vyavasitah — they have resolved rightly, their fundamental orientation has turned toward the Real. The past is acknowledged but does not define the future. The turning of the heart is the decisive act. This verse has given hope to countless people who felt themselves beyond redemption.
