मयाध्यक्षेण प्रकृतिः सूयते सचराचरम् । हेतुनानेन कौन्तेय जगद्विपरिवर्तते ॥
mayādhyakṣeṇa prakṛtiḥ sūyate sacarācaram | hetunānena kaunteya jagadviparivartate ||
Translation
With Me as the overseer, prakriti produces the moving and the unmoving. By this cause, O son of Kunti, the world revolves.
Interpretation
The relationship of the Divine to the cosmic process is clarified: mayadhyakshena — 'with Me as the overseer/superintendent.' Prakriti is the active agent of creation, but it operates under the witnessing presence of the Divine. The Divine does not create directly but its superintending consciousness activates prakriti. This is the Sankhya view integrated into Vedanta: matter (prakriti) and consciousness (purusha/Divine) work together, with consciousness as the illuminating witness that activates matter's creative potential. All the movement of the world (the moving — animals, humans; the unmoving — plants, stones) proceeds from this partnership.
