asaṃyatātmanā yogo duṣprāpa iti me matiḥ | vaśyātmanā tu yatatā śakyo'vāptumupāyataḥ ||
Translation
For one with an uncontrolled self, yoga is difficult to attain — this is my opinion. But for one who has a self under control and who strives through proper means, it is possible to attain.
Interpretation
Krishna closes the practical section on mind-control with a balanced assessment: for the uncontrolled self (asamyatatma), yoga is dushprapam — difficult to attain. He does not say impossible. For the one who has brought the self under some degree of control (vashyatmana) and who makes effort through appropriate means (upayatah — with method, with right approach), yoga is possible (shakya). This is neither false encouragement nor discouragement — it is the honest, balanced teaching of a great master.
