यं संन्यासमिति प्राहुर्योगं तं विद्धि पाण्डव । न ह्यसंन्यस्तसंकल्पो योगी भवति कश्चन ॥
yaṃ sannyāsamiti prāhuryogaṃ taṃ viddhi pāṇḍava | na hyasannyastasaṃkalpo yogī bhavati kaścana ||
Translation
Know that what they call renunciation is the same as yoga, O Pandava. No one becomes a yogi without having renounced selfish resolve.
Interpretation
The equation continues: sannyasa = yoga. The common factor is the renunciation of sankalpa — the selfish resolve, the ego-driven will that insists 'this must happen for me.' Without abandoning this ego-will, no amount of physical yoga practice, meditation, or ritual makes one a true yogi. The transformation must be at the level of intention. This is why the Gita is equally a manual for the householder as for the renunciant — both can achieve the same inner release.
