सञ्जय उवाच | तं तथा कृपयाविष्टमश्रुपूर्णाकुलेक्षणम् | विषीदन्तमिदं वाक्यमुवाच मधुसूदनः ||१||
sañjaya uvāca taṁ tathā kṛpayāviṣṭam aśhru-pūrṇākulekṣhaṇam viṣīdantam idaṁ vākyam uvācha madhusūdanaḥ
Translation
Sanjaya said: Seeing Arjuna full of compassion, his eyes tearful and overwhelmed with grief, Madhusudana (Krishna) spoke these words.
Interpretation
Sanjaya observes Krishna carefully before speaking. The word 'kripaya' (compassion) describes Arjuna's state — his grief is rooted in love, not cowardice. Krishna, as 'Madhusudana' (slayer of the demon Madhu), is about to slay a subtler demon: the delusion that clouds Arjuna's mind.
