Translation
Valor, splendor, steadfastness, skill, not fleeing in battle, generosity, and lordliness in governance — these are the natural duties of a Kshatriya.
Interpretation
The Kshatriya's natural function: valor (shaurya — courageous action in the face of danger), splendor (tejas — the natural authority of one who commands), steadfastness (dhriti), skill (dakshya — tactical competence), not fleeing in battle (the crucial warrior quality — standing firm), generosity (dana — the magnanimity of the powerful toward those in need), and the capacity for governance (ishvara-bhava — the ability to lead and protect). These qualities arise from the rajas-dominant consciousness tempered by sattva — the fire of action directed by wisdom and honor.
