अयुक्तः प्राकृतः स्तब्धः शठो नैष्कृतिकोऽलसः | विषादी दीर्घसूत्री च कर्ता तामस उच्यते ||

ayuktaḥ prākṛtaḥ stabdhaḥ śaṭho naiṣkṛtiko 'lasaḥ viṣādī dīrgha-sūtrī ca kartā tāmasa ucyate

Translation

The tamasic agent is undisciplined, crude, stubborn, deceitful, malicious, lazy, despondent, and a procrastinator.

Interpretation

The tamasic agent: ayukta (undisciplined, not integrated), prakrita (crude, vulgar, operating at the lowest common denominator), stabdha (stubborn, rigid, unable to learn or adapt), shatho (deceitful, untrustworthy), naishkritika (malicious, taking pleasure in harming others), alasa (lazy, unable to sustain effort), vishadi (depressed, despondent, lacking hope), and dirgha-sutri (a procrastinator who stretches everything out and never completes). This comprehensive portrait describes a consciousness so heavy with tamas that effective engagement with life becomes nearly impossible.
