18.16

तत्रैवं सति कर्तारमात्मानं केवलं तु यः | पश्यत्यकृतबुद्धित्वान्न स पश्यति दुर्मतिः ||

tatraivam sati kartāram ātmānaṁ kevalaṁ tu yaḥ paśyaty akṛta-buddhitvān na sa paśyati dur-matiḥ

Translation

Given this, one who sees the pure Self as the sole agent — that one, with unrefined understanding, sees not truly; that is a person of wrong vision.

Interpretation

Despite the five-cause analysis, some still insist on seeing the pure Self (atman) as the sole doer of actions. This is wrong understanding (akrita-buddhitva — undeveloped, immature intelligence). The pure Self is not a doer — it is the witness, the consciousness in which all action occurs. When the ego confuses itself with the Self and says 'I (as pure consciousness) am doing this,' it has made a fundamental category error. The Self does not act; nature (through its five causes) acts within the field of the Self's awareness.
