Translation
The food preferred by each is also of three kinds; so too sacrifice, austerity, and charity. Hear now their distinction.
Interpretation
Krishna extends the guna analysis to the most intimate daily aspects of life: food, sacrifice, austerity, and charity. All four are threefold based on guna-quality. This is holistic spiritual psychology: the entire life — what we eat, how we worship, how we practice discipline, and how we give — all reflects and reinforces the dominant guna. The prescription is not merely to perform spiritual practices but to examine the quality of all one's daily acts and choices. Every meal, every act of giving, every form of discipline is a spiritual opportunity.
