vidhi-hīnam asṛṣṭānnaṁ mantra-hīnam adakṣiṇam śraddhā-virahitaṁ yajñaṁ tāmasaṁ paricakṣate
Translation
Sacrifice devoid of faith, without distribution of food, without proper ritual, without gifts to priests, and lacking proper hymns — that is declared tamasic.
Interpretation
Tamasic yajna: performed without proper method (vidhi-hinam), without distributing food (asrishtannam — ignoring the sacred duty of feeding others from the offering), without proper mantras (mantra-hinam), without gifts to officiants (adakshinam), and — most fundamentally — without faith (shraddha-virahitam). The absence of faith is the root deficiency; all the other deficiencies flow from it. A ritual performed without sincere engagement, without love, without the living intention of offering — this is mere empty form, worse than doing nothing because it creates the impression of spiritual practice while having none of its substance.
