महर्षीणां भृगुरहं गिरामस्म्येकमक्षरम् । यज्ञानां जपयज्ञोऽस्मि स्थावराणां हिमालयः ॥
maharṣīṇāṃ bhṛgurahaṃ girāmasmyekamakṣaram | yajñānāṃ japayajño'smi sthāvarāṇāṃ himālayaḥ ||
Translation
Among the great sages, I am Bhrigu. Among utterances, I am the single syllable Om. Among yajnas, I am japa (silent repetition). Among the immovables, I am the Himalayas.
Interpretation
Among the Maharshis (great sages), the Divine is Bhrigu — one of the most ancient and powerful of the progenitor sages. Among all forms of speech and utterance, the Divine is the single syllable Om — the primordial sound that contains all vibration. Among all yajna (sacrifices), the Divine is japa yajna — the sacrifice of silent repetition of the divine name, considered supreme because it can be performed by all people, in all circumstances, inwardly. And among immovable things, the Divine is the Himalayas — the highest, most ancient, most sacred of mountains.
